Our club's second 2024 recipient of a $10,000 college scholarship was introduced today.  Kayla V, a recent Westside High School graduate, talked about her journey after being selected her sophomore year as one of our challenge scholar candidates.  She was working at McDonald's, going to school, and trying to overcome some challenges when the intervention counselor at WSHS nominated her for this program.  He felt she could achieve more if she had some structure and motivation provided by the challenge scholar program.  Kayla said the encouragement from her mentor, JC Baldwin (Cashmere Rotarian), and the support of family and friends made all the difference.  She made a big effort to motivate herself, and learned a lot by working through problems and pain.  Both her counselor and JC said that Kayla demonstrated a big growth in maturity and in moving toward her goal. Kayla wants to attend WVC and then transfer to a 4-year college to study psychology in order to find a career helping people with social and mental challenges.
